Privacy Policy

The University of Southern California Radio Group’s ”KUSC” Classical Radio service is committed to safeguarding the privacy of data provided by our listeners, donors, and other constituents. This Privacy Notice describes KUSC’s collection, use, and disclosure of information about you that are provided to KUSC. When you submit information to KUSC, you consent to its collection and use of that information as described in this Privacy Notice.  

Please note that KUSC can link to third party sites or services such as social media platforms. This Privacy Notice does not cover any third party sites or services, or your use of them; we suggest that you review those sites’ policies to learn more about their privacy practices.

KUSC’s USE OF INFORMATION

KUSC collects and maintains information about you to provide you with services and based on its legitimate interest in continuing its relationship with you and improving our services to you including staying in touch with you about KUSC programs, events or other offerings that might interest you. For example, we may email you to invite you to join a new newsletter list or invite you to renew your membership. Information may be collected by KUSC to respond to your inquiries, to provide online and programming services to you, as well as for marketing and development purposes, including contests.

Some of this information is collected from you directly and some information is provided by third parties that, for example, verify addresses or provide other information. KUSC uses information about you to tailor our messages and invitations to your interests, to analyze and improve our relationship efforts, and to conduct general demographic and statistical research. We may also use and share your information internally with other University offices and units as necessary to provide services to you.  Some examples of personally identifiable information that you submit through online data entry forms and we collect may include:

  • Name and login information

  • Your phone number

  • Email address

  • IP address

  • Information about types of mobile devices and operating systems

  • Comments on KUSC programs or content

  • Photos or videos

  • Responses to surveys or contests

  • Use of social media platforms such as Facebook or Twitter

  • Your country information

  • Your credit card information when making a donation

THIRD PARTIES

We may disclose personally identifiable information about you to third parties as follows:

Consent. We may disclose your information to third parties if we have your consent to do so, or if you request or authorize it. If you do not wish to be contacted, please indicate your preference by using the opt-out links provided at the bottom of our emails and newsletters or by contacting [email protected]. We will do our best to make your requested change in a timely manner.

Service Providers. We use third parties to support our operations and legitimate business interests and may share your information with such third parties.  We use these third parties to help us develop, operate and improve KUSC. Our third party vendors receive personal information only as reasonably necessary to complete services for KUSC and are contractually bound to maintain confidentiality of information and are prohibited from using or disclosing personal information without permission from KUSC. In certain instances, we may agree to allow a vendor to use aggregated data about activity on KUSC for general improvement or benchmarking purposes, but only where this data is de-identified, so none of our users can be identified from it as individuals.  

Required by Law. We will share your information with third parties to the extent we determine is reasonably necessary to comply with the law, court order, or subpoena. Additionally, we may use or share your information to enforce our Terms of Use or other agreements, or to protect our rights, property or safety or the rights, property or safety of our users or others (e.g., to a consumer reporting agency for fraud protection etc.).

De-Identified and Aggregate Information. We may use information that has been aggregated and anonymized or de-identified to assess and improve KUSC, including to enhance your user experience, to select third-party vendors who best meet our needs, and to help foundation and corporate funders better understand our audience. We may sometimes produce data and analysis results with this aggregated or anonymized information that help us understand our users and their interactions with the KUSC. To accomplish this, we may share aggregated or anonymized information with third parties – and may also share the resulting data and analysis (which will not include any personal information).

If you make comments on the public-facing areas of our online platform or mobile app, other users will be able to see them.

We may also use your information as otherwise described in this Privacy Notice or in a more specific privacy notice associated with a particular department, unit or function.

Contests and User Engagement

From time to time we may offer various opportunities for you to interact with KUSC such as contests or sending us comments, videos, photos. These opportunities may have their own, separate rules. KUSC will make rules related to these opportunities clear for all participants. Some rules may give KUSC additional rights to use entries or submissions. If there is a conflict or inconsistency between such rules and this Policy, the rules will govern and take precedence.

Children Under 13 Years of Age

KUSC does not knowingly solicit or collect information from children 12 years and under without obtaining explicit parental consent.  If you become aware that your child (who is under 13) has provided us with information without your consent, please contact us; upon request, we will work to delete your child’s Personal Information from our files within a reasonable time.

SECURITY

KUSC uses industry standard physical and digital security measures to protect information against theft and misuse. Handling of KUSC’s donor payment information is PCI-compliant.

We seek to implement appropriate technical and organizational security measures to protect your information when you transmit it to us and when we store it on our information technology systems. Unfortunately, no data transmission or storage can be guaranteed to be 100% secure. If you have an account with KUSC, your account password is protected so that only you can access it and view the information that you provide to us through the online site.  We strongly advise you not to share your password with anyone.

You must have a secure browser that supports secure transmission of data across the Internet to send payment to and from KUSC. For more information about your browser’s security features, use your browser’s help feature.

COOKIES AND WEBSITE ANALYTICS

KUSC uses cookies and other tagging or tracking technologies that interact with your browser to increase our digital functionality and offer responsive elements based on your and other users’ actions (e.g., to store your preferences or password and understand your platform use patterns).

When you use KUSC, we may automatically recognize information like your IP address, what type of device you are using, high level location information (e.g., city or state), and your user behavior (such as how long you stay on the website and what links you click on).

Some of the third party vendors that we use to provide services for KUSC may also use their own tracking technologies on our digital properties to help us run and optimize our platforms. These third parties may collect information about your online activities over time and across the KUSC and other online properties. KUSC websites use Google Analytics (or other similar web analytics tools) to collect information about visitor traffic and behavior. This allows us to identify usage trends and to improve the performance and content of our websites. You can use the Google Analytics Opt-Out Browser Add-on to disable tracking by Google Analytics. This Add-On must be accessed from your personal browser. We currently do not use technology that responds to do-not-track signals from your browser.

RETENTION AND DESTRUCTION OF YOUR INFORMATION

Your information will be retained by USC in accordance with the applicable retention periods in the University’s Record Management Policy, available at https://policy.usc.edu/recordmanagement/. The manner of destruction shall be appropriate to preserve and ensure the confidentiality of your information given the level of sensitivity, value and criticality to KUSC.

KUSC and its online platform, mobile app and broadcasting equipment are based in the United States. If you voluntarily submit personal information to us while located or residing in a country outside of the United States, you understand that you are voluntarily agreeing to the use and processing of such information as provided in this Privacy Notice, including transfer of your information to the United States.

If you are located in the European Union, you may also have additional rights with respect to your information, such as: (i) data access and portability; (ii) data correction (including the ability to update your personal data); (iii) data deletion (including the right to have USC delete your personal information, except information we are required to retain, by contacting us); and (iv) withdrawal of consent or objection to processing (including, in limited circumstances, the right to ask USC to stop processing your personal data, with some exceptions, by contacting us). You may also be able to file a complaint with the appropriate supervisory authority in the European Union.

UPDATES TO THIS POLICY

KUSC reserves the right to modify this privacy notice at any time. We encourage visitors to frequently check this page for any changes to this Privacy Notice. If we make changes, we will post an updated effective date below. Your continued use of this site after any change in this Privacy Notice will constitute your acceptance of such change.
