Backstage Spotlight: Classics (with a Twist) & A Legendary Blues Singer Come to SoCal Stages this Fall

Shakespeare

All’s well with the Hollywood Bowl’s upcoming celebration of Shakespeare–marking his death 400 years ago.

On August 30th and September 1st at 8PM, the LA Phil, conducted by Bramwell Tovey, will play music inspired by the Bard from Korngold, Schmitt, Berlioz and Tchaikovsky. And London’s Shakespeare’s Globe, will act out classic Shakespeare scenes on the Hollywood Bowl stage.

Two more suggestions for theater fans:

The J Paul Getty Villa presents their 11th annual outdoor theater production: Haunted House Party, A Roman Comedy (based on Plautus’s Mostellaria, a Roman comedy from circa 200 B.C.)

Directed and adapted by Matt Walker, co-produced by Troubadour Theater Company and running September 8th through October 1st.

The Mark Taper Forum presents: August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

Directed by Phylicia Rashad (who directed “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone” at the Taper in 2013.) and running from September 1st through October 16th.

This ground-breaking play explores how racism in the music industry affected a 1927 recording session in Chicago with real-life legendary blues singer Gertrude “Ma” Rainey.
