Throughout Southern California, concert halls are opening their doors to a new season of music making. Here are some events we’re especially looking forward to:
Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra
Music Director Jeffrey Kahane’s final season opens with concerts September 24 at the Alex Theater in Glendale, and September 25 at Royce Hall at UCLA. For the season opening concerts, violinist Movses Pogossian joins LACO forViolin Concerto No. 2, “Four Serious Songs” by Tigran Mansurian, considered one of Armenia’s greatest living composers.
Piano Spheres
Their 23rd season (dedicated to the centenary of the series’ founder, pianist Leonard Stein) opens at REDCAT October 4 at 8:30PM with guest artist and Grammy-nominated pianist Aron Kallay’s concert titled I’m Worried Now … But I Won’t Be Worried Long.
The Broad Stage Opera Series
Opens Saturday, October 8 at 7:30PM with SopranoAngela Gheorghiu, and featuring tenor Calin Bratescu, conducted by Tiberiu Soare. The second concert of the series will bring tenor Piotr Beczala to The Broad Stage on Sunday December 12 at 7:30PM.
Jacaranda
Their season opens October 29 with a concert at 8PM called Altitude. The concert will take place at the First Presbyterian Church in Santa Monica and features compositions by Per Norgard, Kaija Saariaho, Magnnus Lindberg, and Esa-Pekka Salonen. Artists performing during the evening include The Lyris Quartet, pianist Gloria Cheng, cellist Eric Byers, conductor Andreas Levisianos, soprano Suzanne Waters, Pianist Vicky Ray, harpist Alison Bjorkedal, Alma Lisa Fernandez viola.
LA Opera
On October 13, LA Opera is doing free simulcast screenings of Verdi’s Macbeth starring Placido Domingo in Santa Monica and South Gate
