We’ve got two Classical Californians this week: the co-founders and artistic directors of Salastina – “a musical salon for the 21st century.” Violinists Kevin Kumar and Maia Jasper White began the LA-based concert series fifteen years ago, bringing together resident artists and guest performers to explore chamber music new and old. They’ll share a playlist that includes several of their recordings – including a flute concerto by Weinberg, and a work by Derrick Skye called American Mirror.
Mieczysław Weinberg: Flute Concerto No. 1, mvt 3 - Salastina; Benjamin Smolen, flute
Philip Trumbull White: "O Distinct" from fragile certain songs - Salastina; Chris Hunter, tenor
Eric Whitacre: "The Veil Opens" from The Sacred Veil - Salastina
Béla Bartók: Piano Quintet, mvt. 4 - Kodály Quartet; Jenō Jandó, piano
John Williams: "Rey's Theme" from Star Wars: The Force Awakens - The Recording Arts Orchestra, John Williams; Anne-Sophie Mutter, violin
